Tune-up needed [Apr. 3rd, 2008|12:14 pm]
A community for biking afficianados in DC

Hello everyone. I hope you're all enjoying the increasingly warm weather! It's nice enough for me to start riding to school and work, which is why I'm here...

A couple months ago I purchased a 1980s Peugeot road bike. It's in good shape, as the previous owner obviously never rode it and stored it indoors, but it's at least 20 years old and needs a major tune-up. The brake pads need replaced, cables adjusted, the stem shifters are incredibly sticky, the tires are totally slick, and the toeclips (which I hate and want removed) are practically welded into place.
Is there somewhere in the area that can do this degree of tune-up without charging me an arm and a leg? Or an individual who will do it for cost, plus a couple bucks and a 12-pack of beer? My friend's boyfriend was going to do it for cost, but they broke up before he could get to it. Damnit.
I'll go anywhere Metro accessible, seeing as I can't ride the bike there.

I've been happy with the HTO at Fairfax Circle. Prices are OK and they've done good work (I used the Fairfax Circle Performance once....and only once.)
It's not too far from Vienna Metro, around a mile.

How much do they generally charge you?

Don't remember right now. I've started doing cleanings and minor repairs myself so I only need to go to them for major work.
They have a list of basic charges sitting on the service counter. Give them a call and ask. 703-591-2950

There is also The Bike Lane in Burke. They have a good service department, but it's not near a Metro station.

I'd heartily recommend Spokes Etc., but they're not very Metro accessible, sadly. All of their locations are about 1.5 to 2 miles from a Metro station. :-(

Distance from Vienna Metro to Spokes isn't bad. Tapawingo to W&OD, or Nottaway and Courthouse to W&OD if you want to skip the hills.

I bought my last bike at Spokes in Vienna when I lived in VA. The service there was awesome!! Now I consider them way too far away.
