Beginner Mountain Bike Trails? [Apr. 25th, 2008|01:20 pm]

I've got a couple friends who are interested in trying some off-road mountain biking, and I was wondering if anyone could suggest some trails? Maryland is preferred, within 45 minutes or so of DC would be ideal. Just somewhere with some non-paved paths through the woods, easy enough that they can start from scratch in learning, but with enough obstacles that they can practice the basics.

Thanks in advance!

(Went out riding with one of those friends yesterday - first time she'd been on a bike in probably 15 years. She's spent all day today trawling Craigslist looking for her very own bike to ride, she had so much fun! :-))

Though not in Maryland, Wakefield has some nice beginner trails.

Schaeffer farms, in germantown, is good. There are advanced trails there, but also some beginner stuff.

I'm well aware of Wakefield's awesomeness, but I'd like to avoid crossing the river if possible. ;-) Hadn't heard of Schaeffer Farms, I'll definitely check that out!

Schaeffer Farms has some awesome trails. It's one of my favorites in the area, after Fountainhead. Just be careful to stay on the right color trails, or [Meg?] will break her neck on the hard technical stuff deeper in.

Yep. Indeed. I'll be sure to check that one out. Also found an article which suggested Fairland Park in Laurel, which is less than 20 minutes from our place, so we'll give that one a go, too.

We'll make a convert of her yet! :-D

Rockburn park - next to Patapsco/Avalon is good for beginer riders. You can cross over into Patapsco for some of the easier riding on the Howard County Side (Morning choice is good). Let me know if you need details, I live next to there and ride there frequently.

Fairland is a fun place to ride, too.
